Fred Thompson is still the man

When I found out Fred Thompson was going to be a speaker at the Republican National Convention Tuesday night, I wanted to be sure to tune in.  I am a proud “Fred-Head!” I supported Fred eagerly during the primaries and had hoped he’d be our nominee for the Republican Party.  I don’t think I’ve found a candidate that I aligned more-so than Fred. He was a straight talker, true Federalist, small government, low-taxes, guy.   In one of his interviews he said he was most influenced politically by Barry Goldwater and his book “The Conscience of a Conservative.“  I recommend everyone read it.  It clearly defines most of my political beliefs.

Unfortunately, Fred just didn’t have the fire in the belly for a long campaign.  He announced late and after announcing just kinda disappeared.  I hope if McCain wins in November that their is a place for Fred Thompson.

So anyway, back to last night.  He did not disappoint.  In his normal fashion, he presented a crisp, powerful, articulate,  intelligent and humorous speech sharply criticized Obama while building a strong case for John McCain.

A couple highlights (complete text | video ):

Let’s be clear … the selection of Governor Palin has the other side and their friends in the media in a state of panic. She is a courageous, successful, reformer, who is not afraid to take on the establishment.

Sound like anyone else we know?

She has run a municipality and she has run a state.

And I can say without fear of contradiction that she is the only nominee in the history of either party who knows how to properly field dress a moose … with the possible exception of Teddy Roosevelt.

She and John McCain are not going to care how much the alligators get irritated when they get to Washington, they’re going to drain that swamp.

Now our opponents tell you not to worry about their tax increases.

They tell you they are not going to tax your family.

No, they’re just going to tax “businesses”! So unless you buy something from a “business”, like groceries or clothes or gasoline … or unless you get a paycheck from a big or a small “business”, don’t worry … it’s not going to affect you.

They say they are not going to take any water out of your side of the bucket, just the “other” side of the bucket! That’s their idea of tax reform.

We need a President, and Vice President, who will take the federal bureaucracy by the scruff of the neck and give it a good shaking.

And we need a President who doesn’t think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade.

Cubs the best at halfway

Hard to believe half of a baseball season is over already.  What is even more hard to believe is that the Chicago Cubs, my Cubbies, are tied for the best record in the Major Leagues.  This is uncharted territory for the Cubbies; never before have the Cubs had the best (or tied best) record in the MLB at All-Star break.   What to make of it?  Well, it is only halfway so this encouraged Cubs fan is keeping his optimism in check.

The Cubs have a tough second-half season.  The Brewers will likely make a move with the assistance of their new pitcher, CC Sabathia.  Of course the Cubs did respond by getting Rich Harden from Oakland, who in his first game at Wrigley pitched 5 1/3 shout-out innings and struck out 10!

The Cubs send a franchise-record eight players to the All-Star Game, although Kerry Wood (blister) and Alfanso Soriano (hand) won’t be participating.  I’ll go on a limb and say the National League will win won this year!  The National League seems to be the better league so far this season.

Soriano will finally return after the All-Star break.  Since he injury in June, the Cubs have gone 15-14, not too bad, thanks to help of Reed Johnson and Mark DeRosa.  When Soriano went out, he had the hottest bat in the Cubs dugout.

My Cubs schedule still has three games on tap.  August 19th and September 5th versus the Cincinatti Reds and September 19th versus the St. Louis Cardinals.

NBA Draft Tonight

Of all the professional sports, the NBA has to be my least favorite.  I can’t stand most of the player personalities, the playoffs drag on forever and ever, and it is just not a fun style of basketball for me. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE basketball, I’ll just take mine in the college flavor only.

But, tonight I will take an unusual interest in the NBA.  For the first time since 1987 (Tellis Frank), WKU could (should) have a first round draft pick in Courtney Lee.  Several mock drafts have him going 22nd to the Orlando Magic, with a few mentions of Boston at 30th. He is considered the second-best senior in the draft class and fourth best shooting guard.

Who knows, having a Hilltopper active in the NBA might peak my interest in the league a bit.  Anyway, here are some mock drafts and profiles.  We’ll find it all out tonight at 6:30 ct on ESPN.
